Cup Disappointment for U13B

Paul McCann

Formby’s bowlers restricted Mawdesley A to an achievable total but an off day for the batsmen sees the B team out of the cup.

The match had previously been postponed due to the weather and was played at Bretherton CC.

Mawdesley A won the toss and decided to bat. Formby bowled well from the start with a maiden for Nat Guest in the first over. The first wicket fell in the fourth over, Luke Warden bowling Freeman for 4 with Mawdesley on just 9.

After that Mawdesley’s batsmen got a grip of the game and scored steadily rather than spectacularly, reaching 59 before the loss of the next wicket in the 16th over, Joe Maybury trapping Clegg LBW for 24.
Mawdesley finished on 80 for 2 from their 20 overs, a surprisingly low score on such a small pitch and less than they had scored against Formby’s A team just a week or two earlier. Hemmady was the top scorer on 28 not out.

Formby would have to bat well to reach the Mawdesley target but four runs an over on a small pitch was more than possible. Unfortunately Formby produced probably their worst batting performance for some time. After Daniel McCann was run out going for an unnecessary second run off the third ball of the first over the rest of the batting collapsed and Formby were bowled out for 31 in the 17th over. No batsman scored more than 5 runs. Mawdesley bowled straight but not with any great pace or movement yet managed to bowl six of the Formby batsmen.

A disappointing performance with the bat, especially after a decent showing in the field but lots to learn from for the rest of the season.
