As the 2026 season approaches, there’s a sense of optimism around Formby Cricket Club’s 2nd XI. After a year of consolidation and development, the side looks well placed to build on its foundations, with a strong blend of emerging youth and experienced heads.
In this Q&A, 2nd XI captain Tom Mills reflects on last season’s progress, highlights the importance of confidence among the younger players, discusses new additions to the squad, and shares his excitement for the campaign ahead, both on and off the field.
1. Looking back at last season, what were you most pleased with?
We continued to see juniors making their way into senior cricket which is the most pleasing thing about being part of a cricket club. The 2s consolidated well last year with George Evans in particular stepping up to the 1s and looking very much at home. Lucas Houghton and Ryan Kennedy also looked very comfortable in 1st XI cricket, so I think that is a good reflection on their development in 2nd XI cricket.
2. Is there anything the side learned from last year that you’re hoping will help the team improve this season?
I think mainly the younger players just having more confidence and believing they are good enough.
3. How is the squad shaping up ahead of the new campaign?
It’s looking good. I’m pleased Chris Jones is back playing, we have an Aussie coming over who looks a nice bowler, and with the 1st XI making some signings that will have a knock-on effect so we will get some strength from above. Ryan Kennedy is a phenomenal wicketkeeper so that is a big boost to have him.
4. Are there any players in particular who supporters should keep an eye on this year?
Michael Booth is one to keep an eye on. Ryan Kennedy and Lucas Houghton should have good seasons. We have a young batter called Joe Guy who made his debut last year and looks a cracking player. Then my own nephew Louis O’Connor is developing well. My old mate Elliot Ketteringham has even said he will play the odd game, which is good news.
5. What are you personally most looking forward to about the season ahead? Just being back with the lads, going hard on the pitch but making sure it’s enjoyable and having a beer after the game (over 18s only).
6. Finally, what message would you like to share with the members and supporters of the club ahead of the 2026 season?
Just get down as much as possible. The club survives on bar and membership revenue and, as we know, it’s the best beer garden in Formby!
