As the new cricket season approaches, there’s a real sense of excitement around Formby Cricket Club. Under the leadership of the First XI Captain Ian Cockbain, the team heads into 2026 looking to build on a memorable 2025 campaign that saw them crowned Liverpool & District Cricket Competition ECB Vitality Club T20 champions.

That T20 triumph-secured in emphatic fashion with a 41-run victory over Rainford CC in the final-was a defining moment for the side. It was a performance that reflected a growing maturity within the group, something Cockbain is keen to carry into the new season.

With new signings strengthening key areas, a talented group of young players pushing for professional opportunities, and a squad developing a reputation for grit in tight matches, Ian Cockbain believes the foundations are firmly in place for another strong season. We caught up with the First XI captain to get his thoughts ahead of the new campaign.

Looking back at last season, what were you most pleased with?
I was most pleased with how we have started winning closer games and have a lot more fight about us.

Is there anything the side learned from last year that you’re hoping will help the team improve this season?
This goes hand in hand with the previous point, recognising big moments in the game and making sure we come out on top of those pivotal times.

How is the squad shaping up ahead of the new campaign?
The squad is looking great, we have made some great signings that has made us stronger in areas we needed to strengthen.

Are there any players in particular who supporters should keep an eye on this year?
It’s a big season in particular for our younger lads. Archie, Lucas and Jack are all pushing to try and get a professional contract so they need to be dominating the league this year.

What are you personally most looking forward to about the season ahead?
I am most looking forward to challenging on all fronts across the league and all of the cups.
