As the new cricket season approaches, there’s a growing sense of anticipation around Formby Cricket Club. With improvements made over the winter and strong engagement across all levels of the game, the club is well-positioned for an exciting year ahead. We caught up with the chairman to discuss preparations, ambitions, and what supporters can look forward to this season.
In this Q&A, we speak to the chairman about how pre-season preparations have gone, the work carried out over the winter months, the club’s goals both on and off the pitch, and what makes this season such an exciting one for players, members, and the wider community.
How are preparations going for the new season?
Preparations have been good, with junior, senior and women’s nets all being well attended. The 1st team have made some good signings, and we’ve also had a number of young lads playing over in Australia during the winter.
What has the club been working on over the winter season?
We’ve had new nets installed, which is a great addition for the club, and the veranda at the clubhouse will be repaired soon.
What are the main goals for the club this season—both on the pitch and off it?
On the pitch, the main goal is to win trophies with the senior and women’s teams. Just as importantly, we want to keep developing young boys and girls into good cricketers while making sure they enjoy the game. Off the pitch, we’re focused on continuing to improve the bar and clubhouse so that more people stay and enjoy the club after games on Saturdays.
What are you most excited about as the season gets underway?
I always look forward to the start of the season, and I’m especially excited about seeing the new players arriving at the club this year.
For people in the area who haven’t visited the club before, why should they come down and watch a match this season?
It’s a great place to come and enjoy a good game of cricket, as well as the social side of the club.
With a strong foundation in place and clear ambitions for the months ahead, there’s a real sense of optimism around the club. As the season begins, players and supporters alike will be hoping for success on the field and continued growth off it.
