As the 2026 season approaches, Formby Cricket Club’s 4th XI enters a new chapter. While the 2025 season ended in relegation, it has signalled the beginning of an exciting new phase built around youth development and long-term progression. Under captain Stephen Dwyer, the focus is firmly on nurturing emerging talent, building resilience, and embracing the club’s strong family ethos. In this Q&A, Stephen reflects on the positives from a tough season, highlights the growth of junior and female players, and shares his optimism for the future.
1. Looking back at last season, what were you most pleased with?
Last season was a difficult one and ultimately ended in relegation, but it also marked the start of a new cycle in the development of players at the club. We have been extremely proud to have been playing Premier Division cricket for the last four seasons. The role of the 3rd and 4th XIs very much works in cycles as players break into senior cricket and then go on to play at higher levels within the club and beyond. I was most pleased with how the new crop of U13 and U15 cricketers, as well as female cricketers, approached their first season in senior cricket and developed as the season went on. The support of the junior parents was also very pleasing and much appreciated.
2. Is there anything the side learned from last year that you’re hoping will help the team improve this season?
As mentioned, the most pleasing part was how the new players to senior cricket handled playing in such a tough division and how they developed and got stronger as the season progressed. It was also important to have the support of a few ‘stalwart’ cricketers, alongside those already playing at a higher level. This really helps improve the development of the team as a whole.
3. How is the squad shaping up ahead of the new campaign?
The squad looks strong ahead of the new season. The juniors and new players to senior cricket now all have a season under their belts, so they are better equipped to get off to a good start this year.
4. Are there any players in particular who supporters should keep an eye on this year?
I won’t single out any players in particular, as the junior players are collectively strong and all are exciting young prospects. This is testament to the work that has gone on in the junior and women’s sections over the last 10 years or more. The future of the club looks very bright.
5. What are you personally most looking forward to about the season ahead?
I’m looking forward to playing in Division 1 this season, as the majority of teams in that division are a mix of adult and young players who share the same agenda-to develop young talent and play the game in the right spirit. I also look forward every season to playing a few games with my son. It’s great when we get dads and lads or brothers and sisters playing together-a real testament to how we are very much a family club.
6. Finally, what message would you like to share with the members and supporters of the club ahead of the 2026 season?
I want to wish all players, captains and coaches the very best of luck for the coming season. We have a strong set-up now and the future looks bright for the club at all levels.
Despite the challenges of last season, there is a strong sense of optimism surrounding the 4th XI heading into 2026. With a talented group of young players gaining valuable experience, backed by committed senior figures, Stephen Dwyer’s side is well placed to grow and compete in Division 1. The focus on development, inclusivity and family values continues to define the team, reinforcing a bright and sustainable future for the club.
